The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) invites suitably qualified and physically fit individuals to apply for several General Worker positions within the Northern Operations Branch. Minimum Requirements:

  • ABET Certificate (Adult Basic Education and Training).

  • Higher qualifications will be considered as an added advantage.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with relevant experience in maintenance, gardening, construction, or related work environments.


Knowledge and Skills:

Applicants should demonstrate basic knowledge of:

  • General maintenance practices for government water infrastructure.

  • Handling and operating gardening and cleaning equipment.

  • Vegetation control, lawn care, and general grounds maintenance.

  • Safety procedures in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS).

  • The use of tools and chemicals such as herbicides for maintenance purposes.

  • Basic government work ethics, policies, and workplace discipline.

Applicants are expected to perform practical tasks during the interview process to demonstrate their suitability for the role.


Core Duties and Responsibilities:

Successful candidates will be responsible for assisting technical teams, maintaining infrastructure, and performing various manual tasks. Duties include:

  • Assisting artisans and technicians in carrying out maintenance and operational tasks.

  • Performing loading and offloading of tools, materials, and other items as required.

  • Carrying out general maintenance activities including fencing, weed control, painting, gardening, and maintaining firebreaks.

  • Conducting routine inspections on government water infrastructure, including canals, pipelines, dams, servitudes, and terrain.

  • Reporting any faults, defects, or safety hazards promptly to supervisors.

  • Maintaining clean and safe work environments, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

  • Operating and maintaining basic gardening and maintenance equipment.

  • Providing general support and performing other tasks as directed by the supervisor.


Work Conditions:

  • The job involves physical labour and may require working outdoors under different weather conditions.

  • Candidates must be willing to work overtime or on weekends if necessary, particularly during emergencies or maintenance operations.

  • Adherence to all health and safety regulations is compulsory.
