Job Overview

The Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport is offering 73 exciting entry-level and semi-skilled opportunities:

  • Road Workers – 63 Posts (POST 10/487)
  • Road Operators – 10 Posts (POST 10/488)

Salary: R163 680 per annum (Level 03) Location: Various municipalities across Ehlanzeni, Nkangala, and Gert Sibande Districts in Mpumalanga Type: Permanent government positions

These roles form part of the department’s road maintenance programme to improve road safety, accessibility, and economic development in the province.

Who Can Apply

Road Workers (Entry Level)

  • Grade 10 Certificate (or higher)
  • No previous experience required
  • Physically fit and willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Good teamwork and communication skills

Road Operators (Semi-Skilled)

  • Grade 10 Certificate (or higher)
  • Valid Code EC Driver’s Licence + PDP (where applicable)
  • Operating certificates/competency for heavy machinery (graders, rollers, excavators, tipper trucks, etc.)
  • Proven experience operating heavy equipment

General Requirements

  • South African citizen
  • Preference given to Mpumalanga residents
  • Willing to work overtime and shifts
  • No disqualifying criminal record

Key Duties

Road Workers

  • Pothole patching and road repairs
  • Bush clearing, grass cutting, and roadside maintenance
  • Cleaning drains and removing debris
  • Erecting road signs and traffic control
  • Loading/offloading materials
  • Emergency road clearance

Road Operators

  • Operating heavy machinery for road grading and maintenance
  • Transporting materials between sites
  • Basic machine maintenance and inspections
  • Supporting road construction and rehabilitation projects
