Introduction

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is inviting suitably qualified applicants to apply for the position of Cleaner within the Facility Management division at the Head Office in Pretoria. This position forms part of the Governance and Corporate Services environment under Supply Chain Management. The department seeks to employ individuals who are hardworking, reliable, and committed to maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness within the workplace.

Requirements

To be considered for appointment, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must display competency in performing the core functions relevant to the post.

  • Must be fluent in at least two official South African languages, of which one must be English.

  • Must be a South African citizen with a valid ID.

  • Must have no previous criminal or departmental convictions, and must not have any criminal or departmental cases pending.

  • Applicants will undergo a vetting process, including security screening and fingerprint verification.

  • A Grade 10 qualification will serve as an advantage. Basic literacy, numeracy, and communication skills are essential, as the candidate must be able to read and write effectively.

  • The ability to operate basic cleaning machines and equipment is required.

  • Candidates must be willing to work shifts, weekends, and extended hours when necessary.

  • Relevant short courses in cleaning, hygiene, or facility management will serve as an advantage.

  • A valid light motor vehicle driver’s license will also be considered advantageous.


Core Functions

The successful candidates will be responsible for performing cleaning and general support duties to ensure that the workplace remains hygienic, safe, and functional. Duties will include:

  • Maintaining high levels of cleanliness and hygiene within and around the workplace.

  • Performing daily cleaning tasks such as dusting, sweeping, mopping, polishing floors, vacuuming carpets, and cleaning furniture.

  • Removing waste and refuse bags regularly to maintain a clean environment.

  • Cleaning of bathrooms, kitchens, and office areas according to hygiene standards.

  • Ensuring the safekeeping and proper handling of cleaning materials and equipment.

  • Assisting in loading and unloading goods as directed.

  • Performing garden maintenance services, including watering, trimming, and general outdoor cleaning.

  • Washing and cleaning state vehicles, kitchenware, and utensils.

  • Following occupational health and safety guidelines to maintain a hazard-free environment.

  • Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).


Screening and Vetting

  • All applicants will be subjected to fingerprint screening and residential address verification.

  • Short-listed candidates will undergo vetting under the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, 2007 (Act No. 32 of 2007) and the Children’s Act, 2005 (Act No. 38 of 2005).

  • Candidates whose names appear in the National Register for Sex Offenders or Part B of the Child Protection Register will be disqualified.

  • Candidates must disclose if they are respondents in protection orders under the Domestic Violence Act (1998) or Protection from Harassment Act (2011).

  • In compliance with the Criminal Law (Forensic Procedures) Amendment Act, Act 37 of 2013, newly appointed employees must provide a buccal DNA sample for the National Forensic DNA Database.


Important Exclusions

  • Applicants with previous criminal convictions, or who retired with a severance package, early retirement, or for medical reasons, are not eligible to apply.
